Methane production from landfills. An introduction

The physical and chemical processes involved in landfill decomposition and how they affect the generation of methane are discussed. Various gas recovery systems are reviewed. Currently, there are eight landfill gas recovery systems operating in the United States and numerous projects are in the planning, design or construction stages. Although there are still several aspects of the technology that could be improved, the recovery of landfill gas appears to be sufficiently well developed for widespread implementation. (Refs. 24).
