The U.S. Coast Guard is planning to use a $500,000 oil retrieval device to clean up spills off the west coast. The device, which was produced under Coast Guard contract by Lockheed Missiles and Space Co., can recover up to 1000 gpm of oil in seas of up to 16 ft high waves, and will be transported by a Coast Guard plane to any spill. The unit consists of an air-cooled diesel engine to power the pumps, which are used to retrieve the oil, and is supported by inflatable pontoons. The device is similar to a prototype that Lockheed delivered to the Coast Guard in 1975. The units will be marketed to operators of offshore oil terminals.
