Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5167441

To summarize the results of the first year's High-Efficiency Air-Conditioner Demonstration Project, and, with this knowledge, improve the program in future years by smoothing out program details. In the 4 participating distributor areas, 195 rebates were given to qualifying consumers. Data was gathered from rebate forms, questionnaires mailed in by participants, and sales data forms requested from the participating dealers. The analysis consisted primarily of summaries, cross-classifications, averages, and proportions. Of the 195 participants in the 1985 High-Efficiency Air-Conditioner Demonstration Project, 32% were from Johnson City, 29% were from Jackson, 24% were from Clarkville, and 15% were from Bowling Green. All of the respondents indicated that they were over 24 years old. Two-thirds of the respondents indicated that they earned more than $25,000 a year with the Jackson participants having the highest median income of $35,499. Most of the respondents had at least a high school dipolma, and 74% had at least some college. Of the high-efficiency air-conditioner units purchased, almost one-half were window units. In the majority of the dwellings, the qualifying units were purchased for an existing house by the homeowner.
