Nuclear form factors in the timelike region and photoproduction of pions in nuclei

The requirement of gauge invariance is applied to the matrix element for pion-photoproduction near threshold for spin 1/2/sup + -/..-->..1/2/sup + -/ and 0/sup + -/bold-arrow-left-right1/sup + -/ transitions and leads to relations between F/sub A/(..mu../sup 2/) and F/sub A/(-..mu../sup 2/), and to relations. These relations lead to theoretical predictions for cross sections consistent with experiment within the level of approximations made. Straightforward analytic continuation of the axial-vector form factor to the timelike region is also examined.
