Demineralizing hot rinse water saves $25,000/yr in make-up water, heating costs
- North American Phillips Lighting Corp., Lynn, MA
Production of fluorescent light tubes at North American Phillips Lighting Corporation (Norelco) of Lynn, Mass. requires rinsing of the tubes in washers prior to the application of internal coatings. During the rinsing operation, the water picks up significant quantities of silica and extraneous materials. Concentration of the minerals by evaporation rendered the rinse water unsuitable for recirculation and the blowdown was discharged to drain. Faced with the high cost of energy required to heat the make-up water, discharge and disposal of the hot rinse water was deemed too costly and demanded remedial action. Norelco opted for a design that would allow the 145/sup 0/F contaminated rinse water to be recirculated for ion exchange treatment, satisfying energy conservation requirements. Since the system was installed in May 1982, recirculating the rinse water has saved Norelco approximately $25,000/yr in heating fuel and water costs in addition to product quality considerations.
