Abstract

This paper concerns the decontamination experience gained during the decontamination and decommissioning (DandD) operations on the Loadout Hood within the 233-S Building. The retired 233-S Building (Plutonium Concentration Facility) is being decommissioned as a demonstration project to develop baseline cost, technology, and operational data for DandD of alpha contaminated facilities. The Loadout Hood within the facility is a plutonium nitrate loadout system highly contaminated with transuranics. The paper consists of a brief description of the facility and Loadout Hood, a summary of the engineering and field work performed, and an evaluation of the technology and methods used.

This paper summarizes the engineering and field work conducted to decontaminate the 233-S Building Loadout Hood, a plutonium nitrate loadout facility highly contaminated with transuranics. The scope of work supporting the Loadout Hood decontamination effort included a detailed physical and radiological characterization, decontamination/fixation to reduce surface contamination to levels which would allow structural dismantling to be conducted with minimum airborne contamination, and dismantling to remove contaminated components. Decommissioning a nuclear fuel reprocessing support facility

Lessons learned during decontamination and dismantling of a plutonium nitrate loadout facility, highly contaminated with transuranics, suggest the development of improved design features for future nuclear fuel reprocessing plants. Part of the Hanford Redox Plant, the 233-S Building contains systems formerly used for the final purification and concentration of plutonium solutions. Specific design ideas stem from experiences in decontamination and dismantling of the 233-S Product Removal Can Loadout Facility (Loadout Hood). These ideas could influence the magnitude of future decommissioning projects.
Vibratory finishing as a decontamination process

The major objective of this research is to develop vibratory finishing into a large-scale decontamination technique that can economicaly remove transuranic and other surface contamination from large volumes of waste produced by the operation and decommissioning of retired nuclear facilities. The successful development and widespread application of this decontamination technique would substantially reduce the volume of waste requiring expensive geologic disposal. Other benefits include exposure reduction for decontamination personnel and reduced risk of environmental contamination. Decontamination and decommissioning assessment for the Waste Incineration Facility (Building 232-Z) Hanford Site, [Hanford], WA

Building 232-Z is an element of the Plutonium Finishing Plant (PFP) located in the 200 West Area of the Hanford Site. From 1961 until 1972, plutonium-bearing combustible materials were incinerated in the building. Between 1972 and 1983, following shutdown of the incinerator, the facility was used for waste segregation activities. The facility was placed in retired inactive status in 1984 and classified as a Limited Control Facility pursuant to DOE Order 5480.5, Safety of Nuclear Facilities, and 6430.1A, General Design Criteria. The design of a relocatable confinement building and decontamination module to facilitate D and D of Hanford`s Plutonium Concentration Facility

In 1963 a chemical reaction within the ion exchange tower caused a fire within hanford`s 233-S Plutonium Concentration Facility. The fire caused gross contamination throughout the facility. Shortly thereafter, officials made a decision to attempt to fix the alpha contamination and abandon the facility and its 1,200 grams inventory of plutonium. In 1992, Kaiser Engineers Hanford and Westinghouse Hanford Company began the planning and conceptual design of a confinement building to enclose the former Plutonium Concentration Facility.
