Abstract

The objectives of Tasks 1 and 2 of RP 1398-5, Cracking of Steam Turbine Discs, are to identify key variables for cracking in bores and keyways and in rim attachments of shrunk-on discs used in low-pressure (LP) rotors in US nuclear power plants. A review was conducted of available data concerning disc cracking experience in other countries, factors governing stress corrosion cracking of low-alloy steels, and factors determining environments present in LP turbines. Disc cracking experience in US plants were determined from a survey of US utilities and a series of visits to utilities.

In the wake of the catastrophic failure of a low-pressure (LP) turbine disk at the Hinkley Point Nuclear Station in 1969, considerable research and development has been devoted to the problem of stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in steam turbine rotors. Principle factors affecting the susceptibility of rotors to SCC have been identified as disk yield strength, applied stress level, and surface film/crevice chemistry. Microstructure and cleanliness of the steel have been found to have relatively little effect. An investigation of the nature of in-service cracking in LP turbine rotors encountered in a PWR nuclear power plant was performed. The investigation was based on a metallurgical evaluation of disc rim samples from one of the two rotors involved. The program included a detailed magnetic particle inspection of the rim samples, in-depth metallographic and fractographic examinations of cracked blade attachment steeples and chemical analyses of the disc material.

Risk assessment of failure by stress corrosion cracking in shrunk-on disks of low pressure turbines

Several large LP turbines in the TVA system utilize shrunk-on disks which are keyed to the shaft. The 7th, 8th, and 9th stage disks experience wetness in operation which renders them potentially subject to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in the keyway of the shrink fit area. To minimize SCC concerns in the disk keyway, TVA has embarked on a phased approach to refurbish the LP rotors with a fat shaft and a tab design replacing the rectangular keyways. This paper presents an overview of stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in low-pressure (LP) turbine discs through 1993. Disc cracking experience in power plants and pertinent results of research programs are summarized. Analyses of field experiences and laboratory studies conducted in the United Kingdom, the United States, and other countries showed that stress corrosion cracking of LP turbine disc steels can occur in pure condensed steam or pure water, as well as in known cracking environments, such as hot hydroxide solutions.
