Measurements of the pressure and temperature dependences of the soft-mode Raman spectra of potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP) in both the paraelectric (PE) and ferroelectric (FE) phases are reported. The soft-mode response is overdamped throughout the PE phase at atmospheric pressure, but can be made underdamped with pressure in this phase. Measurements at high pressure in the PE phase where the response is underdamped therefore allow a more accurate determination of the parameters for the coupled-mode system than can be obtained from measurements at atmospheric pressure. Pressure dependence of the exchange interaction in the dimeric single-molecule magnet [Mn{sub 4}O{sub 3}Cl{sub 4}(O{sub 2}CEt){sub 3}(py){sub 3}]{sub 2} from inelastic neutron scattering

The low-lying magnetic excitations in the dimers of single-molecule magnets [Mn{sub 4}O{sub 3}Cl{sub 4}(O{sub 2}CEt){sub 3}(py){sub 3}]{sub 2}, or (Mn{sub 4}){sub 2}, are studied by inelastic neutron scattering as a function of hydrostatic pressure. The anisotropy parameters D and B{sub 0}{sup 4}, which describe each Mn{sub 4} subunit, are essentially pressure independent, while the antiferromagnetic exchange coupling J between the two Mn{sub 4} subunits strongly depends on pressure, with an increase of 42% at 17 kbar. Additional pressure-dependent powder x-ray measurements allow a structural interpretation of the findings.

Coexistence of Soft Modes and Dynamic Ti Disorder in Cubic BaTiO ₃ Studied by Inelastic Neutron Scattering

The phonon dispersion relations in cubic BaTiO ₃ have been measured along the [100], [110], and [111] directions at T = 453 K using inelastic neutron scattering. The isotropic transverse acoustic (TA) branches indicate that the interatomic force constant between Ba and O atoms in BaTiO ₃ is large compared with that between Pb and O atoms in PbTiO ₃. The transverse optical (TO) branches along the [100] and [111] directions soften toward the Brillouin zone center. In the preceding Comment Fontana /ital et/ /ital al/. make three assertions basedon experimental facts they believe to be in contradiction with our results, andthen describe results and conclusions of their own recent Raman studies.
