New motion suppression system for drilling rigs
Abstract
Designed by Sea Tek Corp. to decrease drilling-rig downtime caused by high seas, the SLO-ROL motion-suppression system has reduced drill-barge motion by 75% in sea trials on rigs owned by Perforadora Mexico S.A. and Petroleos Mexicanos. The nonresonant, air-ballast tank system reportedly maintained a 3/sup 0/ maximum roll amplitude in wave heights of 15-25 ft. The drag penalty or loss of towing speed caused by the addition of the system is negligible.
