Industrial energy conservation: 101 ideas at work
General Motors Corp. has developed a systematic approach to industrial energy conservation that has saved it an estimated $3.4 million/yr but cost only $1.2 million to implement. GM's 101 ideas fall under 10 categories: production-specification changes, process changes or elimination, heat-recovery applications, central control and monitoring systems, steam and compressed-air generation, improved equipment controls, air supply and exhaust systems, materials conservation, administrative controls, and miscellaneous. Because of the specialized uses for process equipment and facilities, the conservation ideas described are intended to serve only as thought-starters that must be adapted to individual operations.
