Title: Laboratory-scale catalysis studies of uranium and plutonium fluorination reactions by solid metal-fluorides

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5128663

Various catalysts were evaluated for their effect on the rate of fluorination of the tetrafluorides of uranium and plutonium to produce the hexafluorides. Results of this work show that CoF/sub 3/ and AgF/sub 2/ are more effective than NiF/sub 2/ for UF/sub 4/ fluorination, producing rate increases in the range of 150 to 300 compared to UF/sub 4/ and fluorine alone. The use of these three catalysts was also found effective in the fluorinations of PuO/sub 2//PuF/sub 4/ and pure PuF/sub 4/. However, enhancements were less. NiF/sub 2/ produced the best increases which were 8.1 for PuO/sub 2//PuF/sub 4/ and 3.6 for PuF/sub 4/. Experiments were conducted in a simple flow-loop. Even larger enhancements might be obtained with fluidized beds. Details of the apparatus, experiments, methods, and a discussion of results are presented.
