Title: Isotope exchange and ortho-para conversion of hydrogen on samarium films and its compounds with copper

Abstract

The specific catalytic activity (K/sub sp/) of films of samarium and its compounds with copper SmCu, SmCu/sub 2/, SmCu/sub 5/, and SmCu/sub 6/ was investigated with respect to low-temperature isotope exchange in molecular hydrogen and the o-p (ortho-para) conversion of hydrogen. For isotope exchange K/sub sp/ was two orders of magnitude higher for all the alloy films than for pure samarium films, but the temperature dependence was of a similar nature from -196/sup 0/ to 0/sup 0/. For o-p conversion at -196/sup 0/ K/sub sp/ for the alloy films was 20-30 times higher than K/sub sp/ for pure Sm films and the conversion mechanism differed: on Sm conversion occurs by a paramagnetic mechanism, on the alloy films by a chemical mechanism. The ability of the alloys to dissolve hydrogen at low temperatures was found to be low compared with pure Sm. The possible cases of the observed phenomena are discussed. 1 figure, 1 table.
