Problems peculiar to a geological area or resulting from poor well design sometimes call for well-control procedures based on principles other than the constant-bottomhole-pressure concept, explains Prentice and Records Enterprises Inc. in Part 11 of its well-control series. Certain nonconventional procedures can be based on a low choke pressure, a constant pit level, an attempt to outrun the kick, or even an effort to pump the kick fluid back into the formation. Because of the dangers inherent in these methods, operators should fully understand their effects and use them only in special cases.
