Application of sequence stratigraphy to oil and gas exploration in Bredasdorp basin offshore South Africa

For more than two decades, oil and gas exploration in offshore South African rift basins within structural synrift plays yielded limited success. After the first oil discovery in postrift sediments in the Bredasdorp basin in 1987, sequence-stratigraphic concepts were applied to the Lower Cretaceous postrift sequences to permit correlation of depositional systems tracts and related facies throughout the basin. Extensive high-resolution seismic coverage and borehole control supported the study. The interplay of diminishing rift tectonics, thermal cooling, and inferred eustatic variations in global sea level produced a distinctive series of repetitive cycle depositional sequences. The procedure used to assess the long range generation and transmission resources in the Mid-Continent Area Power Pool

Regional generation expansion planning has traditionally been viewed as merely a compilation of individual utility expansion plans. A study, undertaken by the Mid-Continent Area Power Pool, examines future power supply options from a regional perspective. The pool is modeled as a single utility, without regard to particular economic or operating characteristics of any individual utility or group of utilities. While the dynamic programming method is commonly used in most capacity planning studies, this study makes extensive use of the generalized benders decomposition algorithm in the EPRI's EGEAS computer program to model poolwide optimization of capacity additions.

It has been found that successful well completion and stimulation procedures have provided the following advantages in the Texas Gulf Coast and Mid-Continent regions: (1) the cost of the investment is returned rapidly; (2) oil produced now does not have to be discounted in value; (3) reservoir energy is conserved; and (4) secondary recovery projects can be postponed. Exploration in Mid-Continent geophysical anomaly: rift or riffraff

Geologic and geophysical exploration for oil and gas in the Mid-Continent geophysical anomaly (MGA) resulted in acquiring millions of acres and thousands of miles of seismic data in areas previously considered nonprospective for economic hydrocarbon production. Interpreted to be a rift, this 700-mi feature extends from northern Kansas through Lake Superior into Michigan. Factors influencing major company interest in the feature include: oil occurring in Keweenawan sediments from Michigan; gravity and magnetic data suggesting that clastic-filled basins are present; and extensive folding and faulting of Precambrian rock units seen on seismic sections.
