Title: Current source inverter with commutation control by GTO thyristors

Journal Article · · Electr. Eng. Jpn. (Engl. Transl.); (United States)

The circuit of a series diode type current source inverter is simple and can be operated in four quadrants. Hence, it is widely used to drive an induction motor. However, when the inertia of motor and load is comparatively small, the motor drive system tends to be unstable in a light load condition. Instability is caused mainly by the commutation lag due to reverse biasing of series diodes. Reverse biasing can be prevented by using a small capacity commutating condenser. However, condenser voltage becomes high with an increase of condenser capacitance; therefore, condensers with high withstand voltage have to be used. A remarkable progress in gate turnoff thyristors (GTO) in recent years has made 2500 V/1000 A elements available on the market. A current source inverter using GTO's as commutating elements is proposed. In this inverter commutation lag in the series diode type current source inverter is prevented and the commutating condenser does not require such a withstand voltage.
