Hydrogenolysis of (C/sub 5/H/sub 4/R)/sub 2/Ln(t-C/sub 4/H/sub 9/)(OC/sub 4/H/sub 8/) (R = H, CH/sub 3/; Ln = Lu, Er, Y) in toluene at room temperature and atmospheric pressure forms the dimeric hydrides ((C/sub 5/H/sub 4/R)/sub 2/Ln(OC/sub 4/H/sub 8/)(..mu..-H))/sub 2/, which have been characterized by ir and /sup 1/H and /sup 13/C NMR spectroscopy, complexometric analysis, quantitative deuterolysis, and x-ray crystallography. The analogous deuterides were similarly prepared and characterized. ((CH/sub 3/C/sub 5/H/sub 4/)/sub 2/Y(OC/sub 4/H/sub 8/)(..mu..-H))/sub 2/ crystallizes from C/sub 4/H/sub 8/O/hexane in the monoclinic space group P2/sub 1//c with a = 8.731 (3) A, b = 19.772 (6) A, c = 9.054 (3) A, ..beta.. = 98.71 (3)/sup 0/, and D/sub calcd/ = 1.38 g cm/sup -3/ for Z = 2 dimers. The complex has Y-H bond lengths of 2.17 and 2.19 A with a Y-H-Y angle of 114/sup 0/. The Y-0 and average Y-C(eta/sup 5/) distances are 2.460 (8) and 2.69 A, respectively.
