This paper presents the results of laboratory measurements of gas flow reactions of SO[sub 3] with water and some nucleation particle, such as an aerosol, resulting in the formation of sulfuric acid. This reaction is of concern for the SO[sub 3] emissions from jet aircraft. Sulfuric acid is known to be a major factor in the formation and growth of aerosols in the stratosphere. A reaction rate coefficient of 2.4 [times] 10[sup [minus]15]cm[sup 3]s[sup [minus]1] has been determined from these measurements.
