Title: Lateral response of a group of large diameter piles-a case study of a north sea platform

Abstract

This paper describes the results of a series of analyses conducted to better understand and predict the lateral response of a nine-pile cluster of 84-inch diameter piles. Because of an infilled channel, the soil conditions at the platform location are complex for lateral as well as axial response of piles. A comprehensive study consisting of three different analytical models, combined with centrifuge model tests is made and results presented. It is concluded that the proposed design of the piles was safe and adequate. This paper shows that different and rather ''simple'' approaches can be employed to understand the lateral response of piles in actual applications.
