Title: Health hazard evaluation report HETA 85-048, 04901658, Lausen Engine Division, New Holstein, Wisconsin

Abstract

Walk-through evaluations, employee interviews, and an environmental survey were conducted at the Lausen Engine Division, New Holstein, Wisconsin. The evaluations were conducted in response to two separate requests concerning employee exposure to formaldehyde and phenol vapors during the assembly of brake pads in the subassembly Department, and exposure to dusts during the grinding, cutting, and drilling of engine parts at the Cam Line. Personal breathing samples for formaldehyde were below the analytical limit of detection 2 milligrams per sample. General air samples showed trace levels of phenol, 0.025 parts per million (ppm) and 0.042ppm. OSHA permissible exposure limit for phenol is 5ppm. Personal samples at the Cam Line showed time-weighted average concentrations for total and respirable particulates ranging from 0.78 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/m/sup 3/) to 1.89 mg/m/sup 3/ and from 0.15 to 0.43 mg/m/sup 3/, respectively. OSHA permissible exposure limit for respirable particulate is 15.0 mg/m/sup 3/. The author concluded that no hazard exists at the time. It is recommended that curing and gluing oven temperatures be below 550/sup 0/-F, increased efforts be made to alleviate dermatitis problems should they arise, employees be encouraged to avoid skin contact with lubricating fluids, good personal hygiene be encouraged, and incidencesmore » of carpal tunnel syndrome and other ergonomic hazards be investigated.« less

  • The possible risk of chronic respiratory disease or cancer during the manufacture of printed and coated food-wrapping materials was investigated at Milprint, Inc., DePere, Wisconsin. The evaluation was requested due to concern that a risk of pulmonary sensitization and cancer might exist from worker exposures to chemicals.
  • Evaluation of occupational and general public exposure to Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) during application of this microbial agent for control of the gypsy moth was requested by the Oregon State Department of Human Resources, Health Division, located in Portland. Bt was applied by helicopter on about 250,000 acres of forest, rural, and urban areas in 1985 and 1986. Project operational plans, accident prevention, safety plans, personal protective-equipment usage, and work practices were reviewed and evaluated. Personal exposure and area air monitoring for Bt was carried out during application. Air sampling indicated there was a widespread exposure potential. The author recommends thatmore » care be taken by those employees handling Bt in solution and that splashing of Bt to the eye be avoided due to possible corneal ulcer development.   • Environmental and breathing-zone samples were analyzed for carbon monoxide, carbon-dioxide, ozone, formaldehyde, and organic solvents at the Philadelphia Airport Control Tower, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and the New York Terminal Radar Approach Control, Westbury, New York in October to November 1984, and March, 1985. The evaluation was requested by the Federal Aviation Administration because of employee complaints of eye irritation and respiratory problems. The ventilation systems at both facilities were evaluated. An unspecified number of employees were interviewed. At the Philadelphia facility, carbon-dioxide exposures of up to 1,100 parts per million (ppm) were measured. A carbon-dioxide concentration of 1,000ppm or more wasmore » considered indicative of inadequate outside air supply. All other exposures were well below their relevant standards or non detectable. Eye, skin, throat, and respiratory irritation were the most commonly reported symptoms. Problems in the design of the ventilation systems such as no outside air utilization during periods of extreme temperature and intakes and exhausts being located in the same area were noted. The authors conclude that a health hazard does not exist at either facility. The complaints probably stem from the ventilation systems. Recommendations include modifying and repairing the ventilation systems.« less
  • On November 30, 1981, NIOSH received a request for technical assistance to evaluate the potential health effects of a new radiofrequency heat sealing machine at the Taylor Lock Company. The heat sealer operators had complained of experiencing dizziness and headaches when working at the machine. On January 7, 1981, electric (E) and magnetic (H) field strength measurements of RF radiation were taken at the eyes, neck, chest, waist, gonads, knees, ankles, and hands of the operators of the RF heat sealer. NIOSH investigators concluded that there was a RF radiation hazard to the operator at the unloading end of themore » machine. Recommendations are made in the body of the full report to reduce the RF radiation exposure to the worker.« less
  • In response to a request from the owner/operator of the Haute Nails Salon, Norman, Oklahoma, an evaluation was undertaken of possible chemical exposures from the use of nail sculpturing products. Haute Nails was an artificial nail sculpturing and tanning salon employing two full time nail sculpturers and four part time receptionists. The company was located on the first floor of a two story brick building. Long term general area air sampling was conducted for volatile organic chemicals, formaldehyde, and methacrylates; personal breathing zone air sampling was conducted for methacrylates. Ethyl-methacrylate concentrations in long term samples ranged from 10.3 to 14.1more » mg/cu m. Breathing zone concentrations of ethyl-methacrylate were 128 mg/cu m for a 7 minute sample and 78.9 mg/cu m for a 14 minute sample during nail sculpturing. Carbon-dioxide measurements exceeded the recommended level of 1000 parts per million. The authors conclude that there were no overexposures to ethyl-methylacrylate during the evaluation. The heating and air conditioning system did not provide for the mechanical exchange of outside air and no exhaust fans were located in the area served by the system. The authors recommend that an outside air supply duct be added to the present system.« less
