Title: Carver-Greenfield sludge-drying process

Abstract

The Carver-Greenfield sludge-drying process being offered by Foster Wheeler Energy Corp. is a reverse-flow, multi-effect, fluidized bed evaporative-drying technique for converting any type of industrial or municipal sludge (even toxic ones) into sterile, dry solids of uniform consistency, which, depending upon the sources, may be used for fuel (burned directly as a boiler fuel or pyrolyzed and the resulting gas used as boiler or gas turbine fuel), fertilizers, soil conditioners, or animal feeds. The product may be stored without decomposing, or can be bagged and marketed. A typical plant includes an oil fluidizing tank, multi-effect evaporators, and a centrifuge. Almost any type of oil that is compatible with the sludge being dried and with the intended end use of the product may be used for fluidizing; various petroleum oils may be used when the product is to be used as a fuel. High levels of oil extraction are not necessary in this case, since the petroleum oil will provide a portion of the fuel required for the boiler furnaces. The process is described in some detail and its commercial applications are surveyed.
