Aperture filling of a phase-locked laser array by phase correction with self-imaging

A phase-locked laser array generates a far-field diffraction speckle pattern consisting of many side lobes. The concept of Talbot diffraction self-imaging is proposed, to transfer the array into an equal amplitude phase distribution. Phase correction is used to shift the side lobe energy to the main bright lobe, thereby producing aperture filling. 10 refs.
