Phase transitions in nitrogen observed by Raman spectroscopy from 0. 4 to 27. 4 GPa at 15 K
Raman scattering from solid nitrogen was measured in a diamond-anvil cell from 0.4 to 27.4 GPa at a temperature of 15 K. Two new low-temperature structures, delta(LT1)-N/sub 2/ and delta(LT2)-N/sub 2/, were discovered through changes in the Raman spectra. Both structures bear a resemblance to the known high-temperature delta-N/sub 2/ phase, which has space group Pm3n. From a comprehensive study of correlation diagrams for related structures, likely space groups for the new phases were found. delta(LT1)-N/sub 2/, which forms from ..gamma..-N/sub 2/ at 1.9 GPa and is stable up to about 21.0-24.5 GPa, probably has structure R3c, in agreement with recent theoretical calculations. At higher pressures, delta(LT2)-N/sub 2/ exhibits a structure that is quite possibly R3c. 26 references, 4 figures, 7 tables.
