The decomposition of hydrazine molecules in a nitrogen afterglow at an overall pressure of 1.87 kPa is examined. Based on experimental data, estimates are made of the effect of nitrogen atoms, as well as of electronically (N/sub 2/(A/sup 3/..sigma../sup +/ /SUB u/ )) and vibrationally excited nitrogen molecules, on the decomposition of hydrazine. It is shown that the principal channel for the decomposition of N/sub 2/H/sub 4/ is the reaction N + N/sub 2/H/sub 4/ ..-->.. products. The interaction constant is determined.
