Abstract

Experimental data are presented on production of the isotopes /sup 3,4,6/He and /sup 6,7/Li with large transverse momenta in the interaction between 6.6-GeV protons and the nuclei Be, C, Cu, /sup 112,124/Sn, and Au. The inclusive fragmentation cross sections are compared with data obtained at a proton energy 400 GeV. The strong dependence of the fragment-production cross section on the mass numbers of the target nucleus and of the fragment is investigated.

Inclusive breakup cross sections in reactions induced by the nuclides ⁶He and ^6,7Li in the two-body cluster model

Calculations of inclusive α particle production are performed to interpret reaction experimental data induced by the two-neutron halo 6He and the isotopes ^6,7Li on different target nuclei. In this work, we have implemented the zero-range post-form DWBA to compute the elastic and nonelastic breakup cross sections. Integrated cross sections, angular distributions and spectra are presented. Projectiles are approximated as two-body clusters, namely ⁶He as α+dineutron and ⁶Li (⁷Li) are interpreted as α+deuteron(triton). The production of charged nuclear fragments was measured in collisions of 0.93 GeV/c/nucleon, 1.75 GeV/c/nucleon, and 2.88 GeV/c/nucleon alpha particles on targets of carbon, copper, lead, and CH/sub 2/, using a double focusing spectrometer. Single particle inclusive cross sections are then presented for the production of protons, deuterons, tritons, /sup 3/He, and /sup 4/He at momenta from 0.5 to 11.5 GeV/c and angles from 0 to 12/sup 0/. The relevance of the concept of limiting fragmentation to data is discussed and possible uses of the data to study nuclear structure and particle production mechanisms are pointed out.

Inclusive characteristics have been measured for production of the isotopes /sup 3,4,6,8/He and /sup 6,7,8,9,11/Li in inelastic interaction of 15.3-GeV ..cap alpha.. particles with /sup 112/Sn and /sup 124/Sn. It is shown that the fragment-mass distributions and the ratio of the cross sections for their production in the two isotopes of Sn do not depend on the nature of the incident particle, and the differential energy spectra in the case of ..cap alpha..A interactions are characterized by higher effective temperatures than in pA interactions. The results are analyzed in the framework of the hypothesis of factorization of the cross sectionsmore » in the relativistic energy region.« less
Suggested correction to {sup 6}He, {sup 6,7}Li, and {sup 7}Be production cross sections in {alpha}+{alpha} reactions between 60 and 160 MeV

Reanalysis of {alpha}+{alpha} reaction data at 61.5, 80.8, 118.9, 139.2, and 158.2 MeV [B.G. Glagola {ital {ital et al.},} Phys. Rev. C {bold 25}, 34 (1982)] suggests that inconsistent normalizations have been used for calculating cross sections for {sup 6}He, {sup 6,7}Li, and {sup 7}Be production.
