Theory of stability of subsonic and supersonic plasma flows in MHD channels
- Inst. of High Temperature, USSR Academy of Sciences, 127412 Moscow, Izhorskaya 13/19 (SU)
This paper gives a review of modern analytical methods and results of theoretical studies of stability of MHD plasma flows. For a low-temperature plasma with equilibrium ionization, the instabilities of flows to gasdynamic perturbations are considered. The mechanisms of amplification for traveling acoustic, entropy and vortex waves are discussed. A method of geometric acoustics for high-frequency waves in nonuniform MHD flows is presented. The influence of instantaneous propagation of electric potential perturbations on the sound pulses in MHD plasma is described. The eigenvalue problems pertaining to an appearance of instabilities in nonuniform subsonic and supersonic flows are considered, and the general properties of eigen perturbations are discussed.
