Title: Indiana University High Energy Physics Group, Task C

Abstract

The Indiana University High Energy Physics Group, Task C has been actively involved in the MACRO experiment at Gran Sasso and the SSC experiment L during the current contract year. MACRO is a large US-Italian Monopole, Astrophysics, and Cosmic Ray Observatory being built under the Gran Sasso Mountain outside of Rome. Indiana University is in charge of organizing the United States software effort. We have built a state-of-the-art two-meter spectrophotometer for the MACRO liquid scintillator. We are in charge of ERP, the Event Reconstruction Processor online trigger processor for muons and stellar collapse. We are designing an air Cerenkov array to be placed on top of the Gran Sasso. Our other activity involves participation in the SSC experiment L. As long-standing members of L we have done proposal writing and have worked on important L planning and organization matters. We are now doing development work on the L Central Tracker straw drift tubes, including gas optimization, readout, and Monte Carlos. 12 refs., 20 figs., 1 tab.

  • The Indiana University High Energy Physics Group, Task C has been preparing for the MACRO experiment at Gran Sasso during the current contract year. MACRO is a large Monopole, Astrophysics, and Cosmic Ray Observatory to be built under the Gran Sasso Mountain outside of Rome. Indiana University has been performing extensive Monte Carlo design and analysis calculations and doing development work on the MACRO liquid scintillator. We are constructing a laminator for building scintillator boxes. We participated in the onsite background-measuring test run in the Gran Sasso.

  • We are participating in the experiments GEM at the SSC and MACRO at the Gran Sasso. After introducing GEM in chapter II, we present some results from GEM work we have done during the current contract period. Other significant GEM activities by our group such as participation in the evolution of GEM (as founding fathers), GEM proposal writing, and the design of GEM electronics for the Interpolating Pad Chambers for the Central Tracker are not included in this report. In chapter III we introduce MACRO and give a brief status report. Instead of a survey of our many ongoing contributions tomore » MACRO, we choose in this technical report to concentrate on reporting results of some MACRO data analysis headed by our group (with important contributions by our collaborators, of course). This analysis, in chapter IV, concerns Point Sources.« less
