Title: Outline of the oil basins of Turkey. Part 1

Abstract

Between 1954 and 1970, a total of 1,100 party-mo. of field geology, 1,102 party-mo. of geophysical survey, and 1,162,424 m drilling of all kinds has been realized in Turkey. As the result of this exploration effort, 21 oil fields have been discovered. Each sedimentary basin in Turkey is either the result of or is affected by the Alpine orogenies. However, there are various basins with different geologic settings and structural history. Except SE. Turkey, the other basins are limited in size and mainly occupy certain intervals of Upper Cretaceous-Tertiary times. Southeast Turkey is the center of exploration, but presently there is a strong tendency to explore other basins which also offer reasonably good oil possibilities. Offshore areas also are attracting the interests of the oil companies and in fact, some of them are already being explored. Geological features of several areas are discussed. Tabular data show the production of oil in Turkey from 1959 to 1970.
