Vast geologic basins attract Indonesian oil exploration

The first of 3 installments on Indonesia describes the Sumatra area. North Sumatra contains about 31,000 sq miles on shore and off shore, and has some 27,800 ft of Tertiary sediments. In the Rantau field, 12 to 21 different oil- productive sands up to 90 ft thick lie at from 720 to 2,400 ft. Central Sumatra is the most prolific basin. Here Caltex is producing from 18 fields and has 10 discoveries awaiting development. In May 1973, Caltex produced 1 million bopd; the average for 1973 will be about 870,000 bopd. The Minas field measures 6 x 15 miles, with reserves estimated at 4 billion recoverable bbl. The S. Sumatra Basin with 30,000 sq miles, contains numerous large structures. The SW. Sumatra region awaits further drilling. Overall, in Sumatra, in 1972, 155 exploratory tests were drilled, with a 30% success ratio. Maps and stratigraphic charts of the first 3 regions are given.Production is from Tertiary sediments of excellent reservoir characteristics.
