Title: Ecological protection in the Las Tres Virgenes, Mexico, geothermal field

Abstract

The programs of environmental protection designed by Comision Federal de Electricidad are described in a general way. These programs detect, avoid, soften and compensate the environmental impacts product of the exploration, construction and operation activities of the geothermal field Las Tres Virgenes, this field is in the buffer zone of the biosphere reserve {open_quotes}El Vizcaino{close_quotes} at the north of the State of Baja California Sur, Mexico.

  • Ecological and reservoir characteristics of the Las Tres Virgenes geothermal field are presented. Pressure and temperature logs show a liquid dominated reservoir at 245{degrees}C and 61 bars. The granodeoritic with moderate fracturing rock hosts the geothermal reservoir. Production characteristics of well LV-3 were recently evaluated, produced fluids have geothermal genesis and the electrical output is 1.5 MW. At present, LV-1 is on drilling step. According with electrical needs and behaviour of the production characteristics of the zone, CFE has projected the installation in the near future one 2 MW unit. The characteristics of this turbine are specified, also the ecologicalmore » criterion. A 115 KV line is needed in order to integrate this project to the existing grid. In 1995, four new deviated wells will be drilled in order to prove-up 4 MW power capacity and to explore new areas. Two of these wells will be located on the same site as of LV-3. The third well will be drilled on the same site of LV-1. Finally, the fourth injection well will be located 2 km from well LV-3.« less
  • With the rapid growth of the Albuquerque region, groundwater contamination from nonpoint sources has become an increasing concern. Agriculture, one major land usage of the basin area, can abe responsible for the leaching of nutrients and chemicals to shallow groundwater via irrigation return flows. Even so, there is almost no available information regarding agricultural impacts on groundwater quality in New Mexico. The major objective of this project has been to develop a data base pertaining to this issue. The main goals of this project are: to adapt the tile drainage system to allow for the collection of irrigation return flowsmore » on an actual, operating farm; to utilize the tile drain sampling system to quantify nutrient and pesticide levels in the irrigation return flow; to determine the local hydrology in an around the field site; and to use the collected field data to test the two-dimensional water flow and chemical transport model (CHAIN 2-D).« less
  • A 91-m transect was set up in an irrigated field near Las Cruces, New Mexico to investigate the spatial variability of unsaturated soil properties. A total of 455 sampling points were monitored along a grid consisting of 91 stations placed 1 m apart by 5 depths per station. Post-irrigation soil water tension and water content measurements were recorded over 45 days at 11 time periods. The instantaneous profile was used to estimate the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity at the 455 sampling points. Fifty soil samples were also taken for analyzing sand, silt, and clay content distributions. The spatial and temporal variabilitymore » of soil water tension and water content were investigated along with the spatial variability of parameters of an unsaturated hydraulic conductivity model. Results of the analysis show that spatial variation in soil water tension and water content is consistent with the soil texture spatial variability. In addition, the spatial distribution of the estimated parameter value of unsaturated hydraulic conductivity reflects the soil texture distribution. Using the statistics of the estimated hydraulic parameter values, a stochastic soil water tension model was employed to reproduce the variability of observed soil water tension. Although many assumptions were made, the results of the simulation appear promising.« less

  • The main object of Comision Federal de Electricidad (CFE`s) Geothermal Field at Los Azufres, is to generate geothermal electricity; however with the new politics in Mexico, CFE has designed a pilot project in order to profit from the geothermal residual energy and to attract national or foreign investors and convince them that direct use of geothermal energy is an attractive feasible and economical project. The object of this paper is to present the CFE experiences in different pilot projects applied to direct uses of geothermal energy.
