Aromatic solvent bioreclamation in a highly anaerobic aquifer
- HSA Environmental, Inc., Tampa, FL (United States)
Historical losses of aromatic solvents at a manufacturing facility resulted in groundwater contamination, severe odor problems, metal corrosion, and health concerns. Solvents releases were attributed to system failures, accidental losses, and poor housekeeping practices. A bioreclamation system consisting of both soil venting and a bioaeration unit was used to reduce the groundwater contamination and to eliminate odor and potential health concerns. System performance was monitored every 6 months. Benzene, toluene, diethyl ether, and hydrogen sulfide concentrations decreased in all monitoring wells, and dissolved oxygen increased from zero to several mg/L. The remediation schedule was threatened when an accidental acetone spill contaminated groundwater; however, within 9 months of the release, acetone concentrations were reported below the detection limit. A single air sparging well was installed to complement the in situ bioremediation system and to enhance the removal of a remaining hot spot via stripping and biodegradation. In situ bioremediation was remarkably effective. The estimated duration of treatment was 8 years; now it appears likely that groundwater restoration will be achieved within 6 years.
