Amoco`s Drilling Technology Test Facility
The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate one operator`s commitment to the advancement of drilling and completion technology by opening their world class Drilling Technology Test Facility (DTTF) to the industry. The paper will describe the facilities, the individual test equipment available, and the services that Amoco is now providing to the rest of the drilling community. The DTTF is the collection of Amoco Exploration Production Technology Group`s (EPTG) drilling research and testing laboratories located in the Tulsa, Oklahoma area. Currently, the DTTF consists of the Catoosa Drilling and Completions Test Facility, the Drilling Hydraulics Test Loop, the Catoosa Test Ramp, and the Drilling Simulator Lab Rig. Each individual facility is described in detail later in this paper. The facilities were initially established to provide a low risk, cost effective environment to advance drilling and completion technology for Amoco by the rigorous downhole testing of new tools, fluids and procedures. Budget cuts and reductions in expense-related items forced the facility to find other sources of funding. By gradually opening up the facilities to external companies and by collaborating with other technology-interested institutions, the DTTF not only survived, but prospered.
