Title: THE PHASE DIAGRAM OF THE TITANIUM-GADOLINIUM SYSTEM (in Russian)

Journal Article · · Zhur. Neorg. Khim.

Ti was fused with Gd in an arc furnace with a tungsten electrode in a purified helium atmosphere. The titanium alloys contained 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, 20, 40, 60, 80, 80, and 99.7% gadolinium. Differential thermal analysis shows formation of a eutectic at 1120 deg C. The low-temperature modification of gadolinium is isomorphous with the low-temperature modification of titanium (hexagonal close packing). X-ray analysis showed that up to 800 deg C the phases consist of gadolinium in alpha -titanium, and of titanium in alpha -gadolinium. No intermetallic compounds are formed. The solubility of Gd in alpha -titanium is 1.0 wt% at 600 deg C and increases to 3.0 wt% at 850 deg C. The solubility of titanium in gadolinium is <0.3 wt%. An increase in hardness is observed for the solid solutions. The hardness is approximately additive in the two-phase region. The phase diagram of the Ti-Gd system is analogous to the phase diagrams of titanium with other rare earth metals. (TTT)
