A SURVEY OF THE BEGINNING OF LIFE CHARACTERISTICS OF URANIUM-FUELED, WATER- MODERATED LATTICES

BS>Calculations were performed on the beginning of life characteristics of uranium-fueled water-moderated lattices with water-to-uranium volume ratios of 0.4 to 4.0 and enrichments of 1 to 4%. Both uranium metal and UO/sub 2/ fuel were investigated. Results indicated that an initial conversion ratio of the order of 0.9 may be attainable in lowenrichment uranium-fueled, water-moderated reactors with sufficient initial excess reactivity to allow a reasonable lifetime. The maximum conversion ratio for a given initial excess reactivity corresponded to fairly dry cores, with metal-to-water volume ratios of the order of one. (M.C.G.)
