Title: Decontamination of Radioactivity by the Use of Activated Charcoal (in Japanese)

Journal Article · · Radioisotopes (Tokyo)

The use of activated charcoal for decontamination of contaminated surfaces was investigated. The relation between adsorption of some radioisotopes on charcoal and pH values was observed. In the case of Zr/sup95/--Nb/sup 95/, Ru/ sup 106/, Ba/sup 133/, and Ce/sup 144/ almost complete adsorption was observed above pH 3 to 5. The absorption coefficient for I/sup 131/ was very high up to pH 8, but it showed some decrease at the higher pH values. Adsorption of Cs/sup 137/ was rather low at any pH value. Desorption of the radioisotopes from charcoal was investigated. Ba/sup 133/, Cs/sup 137/, and Ce/sup 144/ are rather readily desorbed from charcoal, while Zr/sup 95/-- Nb/sup 95/, Ru/sup 106/, and I/ sup 131/ are not so much. Decontamination of the radioisotopes from the skin- shaped polyvinyl sheet was tried using charcoal suspension, and the results were compared with those using water or synthetic detergent solution. For Ru/sup 106/ ,Ce/sup 144/, and Zr/sup 95/-- Nb/sup 95/ the extent of decontaminat ion by the detergent solution and by the charcoal suspension are similar, while for decontamination of Ba/sup 133/, the charcoal suspension showed a much higher efficiency.
