ENGINEERING EVALUATION STUDIES ON HEAVY WATER MODERATED POWER REACTOR PLANTS. Quarterly Progress Report, January-March, 1962
Work on the computer program for the economic optimization of D/sub 2/O moderated power reactors is continuing. Optimized designs were established for three D/sub 2/O cooled plants. These are: the liquid cooled, UO/sub 2/ and U- metal fueled indirect cycle plants; and the boiling D/sub 2/O cooled, UO/sub 2/ fueled, direct cycle plants. The scope of work was extended to include a computer analysis of organic cooled, D/sub 2/O moderated power reactors. The reactor is a pressure tube type fueled by either UC or UO/sub 2/. The fuel cladding and pressure tube materials are Aluminum Powder Material (APM) and the plants will have a nominal 300 MW(e) (net) capacity. The same general design and cost philosophy developed for the D/sub 2/O cooled plants will be used in this program and the plant facilities and systems will be kept as nearly identical as possible to those used for the D/sub 2/O cooled units, except where the use of the organic coolant dictates a difference. Work is presently in progress to develop the design and cost equations for the organic auxiliaries and reactor plant structures. A preliminary set of general arrangement drawings for the organic plant was prepared. (auth)
