NEUTRONIC REACTOR
A neutronic reactor of the heterogeneous type and employing replaceable tubular fuel elements and heavy water as a coolant and moderator and fuel elements therefor are described. A plurality of fuel tubes, having their axes parallel, extend through a tank type pressure vessel which contains the liquid moderator. The fuel elements are disposed within the fuel tubes in the reactive portion of the pressure vessel during normal operation and the fuel tubes have removable plug members at each end to permit charging and discharging of the fuel elements. The fuel elements are cylindrical strands of jacketed fissionable material having helical exterior ribs. A bundle of fuel elements are held within each fuel tube with their longitudinal axes par allel, the ribs serving to space them apart along their lengths. Coolant liquid is circulated through the fuel tubes between the spaced fuel elements. Suitable control rod and monitoring means are provided for controlling the reactor.
