DIFFUSION BONDING HIGH-TEMPERATURE ALLOYS WITH BERYLLIUM. BERYLLIUM- TRANSPORT ALLOY STRIPS PRODUCE DIFFUSION-BONDED JOINTS IN 1 OVER 2 TO 5 MIN AT 1940 TO 2100 F BONDING TEMPERATURES
The concepts and advantages of diffusion bonding hightemperature alloys with beryllium are discussed, and a practical method for diffusion bonding is presented. Results show that beryllium is a useful primary diffuser element for diffusion-bonding iron, nickel, and cobaltbase high temperature alloys. Beryllium-transport alloys are also developed that facilitate preplacement of beryllium at interfaces between base metals to be joined. These alloys contain beryllium in solid solution at bonding temperature, and they produce diffusion- bonded joints rapidly from 1/2 to 5 min at bonding temperatures of 1940 to 2100 f F. Only intimate contact is needed between the berylliumtransport alloys and the base metal members. The alloys can be easily rolled into strip stock and can be formed into complex shapes to facilitate preplacement in joints. The shear strengths of the diffusion-bonded joints qualitatively correlate with the base metal ultimate strengths and yield strengths at 1500 f F. (N.W.R.)
