STUDY ON THE TREATMENT OF RADIOACTIVE WASTE WATER BY FLOCCULATION
The removal efficiencies of various radionuclides through three types of flocculation were investigated. (1) Bentonite-polyelectrolyte flocculation. Ba/ sup 140/-La/sup 140/, Cs/sup 137/ Ce/sup 144/-Pr/sup 144/, Zr/sup 95/-Nb/sup 95/, and Ru/sup 106/-Rh/sup 106/ were effectively removed, but I/sup 131/, P/sup 32/, and Sr/sup 89/ were not removed satisfac torily. The effects of pH on Cs/sup 137/ removal and of Na/sup +/ ion on Sr/sup 89/ and Cs/sup 137/ removal were studied. (2) Phosphate flocculation. Sr/sup 89/, Ce/sup 144/-Pr/sup 144/, and Ba/sup 140/- La/sup 140/ were effectively removed, but not P/sup 32/, I/sup 131/, and Cs/sup 137/. (3) Ferric hydroxide flocculation Ce/sup 144/-Pr/sup 144/, P/sup 32/ and Ba/sup 140/-La/sup were effectively removed but not I/sup 131/ and Cs/sup 137/. Removals were found to be larger in a recirculation type flocculator than in jar testers. (D.L.C.)
