Irradiated gaseous acetylene produces cuprene and benzene. When pure liquefied acetylene was irradiated at -- 160 deg C, a yellowish-brown polyacetylene was formed. This reaction was an ionic reaction. This liquid- phase polymer was believed to be a cis-tyne polyacetylene. At -- 196 deg C, solid acetylene was irradiated, and polyacetylene was formed. This solid-phase polymer was brownish-red and believed to be a trans-type polyacetylene. In both the liquid-phase and the solid-phase reactions, benzene did not form. (OID)
