AN IMPROVED METHOD FOR DETERMINING THE ACTIVE CONCENTRATION OF NATURALLY RADIOACTIVE AEROSOLS (in Russian)
Airborne activity is usually determined by passing a given amount through a filter and measuring the alpha -activity of the filter; the results aie expressed as a percentage of the maximum permissible concentration. Certain simplifying assumptions must be made concerning the short-lived isotopes. In order to ascertain that these approximations are valid, the degree of disturbance of the equilibrium between Rn and its decay products must be established. Calculations indicate that in the case of a slight disturbance of the equilibrium, the correct value is in average twice larger than the calculated approximate value; under strongly disturbed conditions this divergence is much more marked and therefore a corrected equation should be used. For determining the radiation hazard presented, it is more convenient to dctermine the total alpha -energy of the decay products contained in 1 liter of air corresponding to the latent energy'' of the system defined by H. Kusnetz (Amer. Ind. Hyg. Assn. Quarterly l7: 85(l956)). (TTT)
