Title: PROTON-NEUTRON SCATTERING AT 5.1 Bev

Journal Article · · Dissertation Abstr.
OSTI ID:4813849

A monochromatic proton beam of 5.1 Bev was used for studying the scattering of the protons by bound neutrons in nuclear emulsion. A total of about 500 nucleonic events was found by on-track scanning as well as by following the light charged secondaries. Of these about 200 were identifled as inelastic p- n events. The inelastic cross section for p-n scattering was determined to be between 31.3 to 36.5 mb compared to 25.5 mb for inelastic p-p scattering. Directional asymmetry was found among the charged particles emitted in the forward and backward directions in the cms. No charge exchange scattering was observed, indicating a cross section less than 1.4 mb in comparison with the elastic cross section of 8.7 mb in p-p scattering at the corresponding energy. A modified directional isobar model was proposed for possible explanation of the main characteristics of the proton-nertron scattering. The model also provided means to calculate the cross sections for p-n and p-p scattering at this energy in terms of the pion-proton scattering cross sections at 760 Mev. The result was also compared with that calculated from the statistical model, which took into consideration the formation of the isobaric states T = 3/2 and T =1/2. Diffraction scattering of the incident protons with emulsion nuclei was discussed. Data obtained by the authors on the gyromagnetic ratio were published previously (Izmeritel'naya Teknnika (1959) No. 2; Trudy Komiteta Standardov, Mer i lzmeritel'nykn Priborov, 114: 54(1961)). This work was further continued for obtaining more reliable results. The experimental setup of the free nuclear induction method, used for the measurements included a sensing element with a detecting coil which contained a 2.8-cm/sup 3/ ampoule with distilled water, surrounded by a magnetizing coil; Helmholtz coils, an amplifier and a frequency meter. The average value of the measuremerts gamma = (267506 plus or minus 6)(raised dot) 10/sup 3/ weber/sup -1/. m/sup sec/sup -1/, agrees well with that obtained by G. K. Yagola et al (lzmeritel'naya Teknnika 24-9 (1962) No. 5.) (TTT)
