THE REACTION OF LOW MOLECULAR WEIGHT ORGANIC COMPOUNDS INITIATED BY COBALT- 60 GAMMA-RADIATION. V. POLYMERIZATION OF VINYL ACETATE. EFFECTS OF MONO-FUNCTIONAL ADDITIVES (in Japanese)
Vinyl acetate was polymerized by gamma irradiation from a 2000-curie cobalt-60 source in the absence or presence of additives in the temperature range from 20 to 30 deg C in vacuum. In the absence of additives, the rate of polymerization and the molecular weight of the polymer depend largely on the reaction temperature. The over-all heat of polymerization is found to be 2.0 kcal/mole. About 70 kinds of additives were examined at the concentration of 0.1 mole/l, as the effect of the additive was remarkable even at low concentration. Acceleration efficiency, R/sub E/(R/sub E/ = R/sub p/ x R/sub M/, where R/sub p/ is is the ratio of the polymerization rates and R/sub M is that of viscosity average molecular weights of the polymers produced with and without the use of an additive under the same experimental conditions), remains constant so long as the additives possess the same functional groups, and is independent of the change of reaction temperature. The value of R/sub E. decreases in the following order: acids and their anhydrides > hydroxy compounds > esters > hydrocarbons > ethers > ketones > halogenated compounds > amines > nitro compounds.
