VARIATIONS OF Sr/Ca RATIOS AND Mg CONTENTS IN RECENT CARBONATE SEDIMENTS OF THE NORTHERN FLORIDA KEYS AREA
Abstract
The amount of strontium in Recent carbonate sediments increases from the Pleistocene reef area of the Florida Keys to the living reef area on the east. The maximum values for strontium contents are reached about one nautical mile on the leeward side of the living reef, and there is a gradual decrease closer to the living reef and seaward from it. Within the same sediments, the magnesium content decreases as the strontium content increases and reaches a maximum where the strontium content reaches a minimum. The high strontium-low magnesium content and the low strontium-high magnesium content are related to the mineralogical nature of the organic remains composing the sediments. (auth)
