Title: SEMIDIURNAL VARIATION OF COSMIC RAYS ON GEOMAGNETICALLY DISTURBED DAYS

Journal Article · · Proc. Phys. Soc. (London)

A statistical study is made of the semidiurnal variation of the intensity of cosmic rays on geomagnetically dis turbed days. This study is based on nucleonic component data obtained at the quatorial stations of Ahmedabad and Huancayo, during 19 7 and 1958. The planetary character figure C/sub p/ is used as n index of geomagnetic activity. It is shown that the low average amplitude of the semidiurnal variation observed on geomagnetically disturbed days, compared with geomagnetically quiet days, results primarily from the large variability of the time of maximum of the semidiurnal variation on disturbed days. The individual amplitudes of the semidiurnal variation on geomagnetically disturbed days are comparable with those on quiet days. This resuIt constitutes evidence that the semidiurnal variation of the intensity of cosmic rays, at equatorial stations, is of extra-terrestrial origin. It is suggested that any theory that seeks to explain the origin of the solar daily variation of cosmic rays must take account of semidiurnal as well as diurnal variations. (auth)
