THE DETERMINATION OF SELF-DIFFUSION COEFFICIENTS OF MOLTEN METALS BY MEASUREMENT OF THE RADIOACTIVITY DURING THE DIFFUSION PROCESSES (in German)
An apparatus was developed which permits the concentration of a radioactive component to be followed during the diffusion process as a function of time by measurement of the gamma radiation beam scattered at a fixed point of the sample. By maintenance of the boundary conditions applied in monitoring methods, the self-diffusion coefficient of tin could be determined above the melting point in dependence on the temperature by using radiochemically purified Sn/sup 113///sup 125/. Comparison with measurements which were carried out by other methods shows that the apparatus described for the measurement of self- dlffusion coefficients by the use of gamma -emitting isotopes is suitable for liquid metals.
