The use of sodium chloride in the separation of the economic constituents of columbite and ilmenite by chlorination is described, and the optimum conditions for chlorination were determined. The addition of alkali chloride in the chlorination process was found to be advantageous since it complexes iron and uranium to form non-volatile double salts, thus rendering an enrichment of the main values in the volatiles.
