EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES ON THE COMBINED EFFECT OF RADIATION AND VARIOUS CHEMICALS ON MITOTIC CELLS. XXIV. EFFECT OF COMBINED USE OF X-RAYS AND CITRIC ACID
Using MTK sarcoma III of rats, 3-4 days after transplantation, the effects of citric acid and its combined use with x rays on mltosis was observed. After injection of an aqueous solution of citric acid into the peritoneal cavity of the rat, the frequency of mltosis, the difference of each mitotic phase in number, and the number of tumor cells in the ascitic fluid were examined. Citric acid caused a marked increase in the mitotic index of the sarcoma cells. The number of cells in each mitotic phase increased in correspondence with the mitotic index. Citric acid, however, caused a considerable decrease in the cell number, which resulted in an antagonistic effect upon the mitotic index. In the combined use of citric acid with x rays, cItric acid did not show any effect on restoration or protection of mitosis, (Abstr, Japan Med., 2, No. 2, Feb. 1962)
