Homogeneous solutions of poly(methyl methacrylate) in styrene were exposed to Co/sup 60/ gamma rays. The rate of the styrene polymerization obeys the classical law of the kinetics of radiochemical polymerization but it seems to be affected by energy transfers. The curve for the precipitatioa of the crude polymer formed during the irradiation was compared to that of a mixture of two homopolymers. The differences observed prove the existence of the grafted copolymer which can be separated by fractionation. The grafted copolymer yield is less than can be explained if the radiolysis severs only the principal chalns of the polymethacrylate. It seems that small radicals formed by the radiolysis of lateral branches of the polymethacrylate contribute to the homopolymerization of the styrene. A recent theory on the scattering of light by copolymers was applied to the grafted copolymer. It was found that this grafted copolymer is polydispersed both in mass and in composition, but the composition polydispersion is not very large. The comparison of the molecular mass and the gyration radius of the grafted copolymer with those of nongrafted poly rene and poly(methyl methacrylate) leads to the conclusion that the grafted copolymer has, on an average, two branches of polystyrene per chain of poly(methyl methacrylate that the copolymer is branched.
