Title: A HIGH-FREQUENCY REACTION SYSTEM FOR SHORT ELECTRON LINEAR ACCELERATORS. DESIGN OF A 2-Mev MACHINE (in French)

Journal Article · · Ann. Radioelec.
OSTI ID:4791727

For an electron linear accelerator, a system is devised for the recovery of the residual output energy not used in the structure. The essential part of this system consists of a variable transmission directional coupler, specially designed for high-power operation. Having first defined the efficiency of the system and shown its essential properties, an approximate theory is Worked out followed by an experimental investigation of this type of variable coupler. A reaction arrangement is built that consists of a travelingwave resonant cavity in which the power is injected by the coupler. Advantage is taken of the Q of the cavity to obtain Much stronger fluxes than are provided by the source. A traveling-wave linear accelerator can then be inserted in this cavity, and optimum gain adjusted (related to dissipation in the structure) by means of the variable coupler. Various phase shifters prevent the formation of spurious waves. Full-power tests (2 Mw in the ring) are carried out with a waveguide section fitted with an iris, simuiating a 2-Mev accelerator. The experimental results confirm the predictions. (auth)
