Experimental study of the influence of non-proportional response of NaI(Tl) scintillation crystals upon the energy resolution for gamma rays
The resolution of a summing Compton spectrometer ls accurately measured for several gamma ray energles. For the events detected, only one Compton scatterlng takes place in the first crystal. Thus for the part of the energy that is released ln the first crystal, the contrlbutlon to the line width arising otherwise from a varyng number of Compton electrons and non-proportlonal response of the scintillator is not present. Thls contrtbution ts evaluated by comparlng, for each energy, the resolutlon of the summing Compton spectrometer with the resolution expected if the total energy were shared by the two crystals in the same ratio, but multiple scatterlng were prcsent tn both of them. The results agree with theoretlcal expectattons. (auth)
